Does it really matter when the speedo readout is green? Arguable.Īlso, check out this guy's Cadillac collection photos, past and current:ĭude is meticulous about his notes, any differences from stock etc. See how the yellow/amber digits in the center of the dash match for the Fuel Economy, A/C, and stereo readouts? That's the color matching issue I'm talking about. "Delco-GM/Symphony Sound System" depicted: Hey DFW, this is the page showing the Eldo options from the big 1985 Cadillac model lineup catalog. I'm just trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible here before making a final decision. If you find anything else useful or interesting, don't hesitate. If I find one with a DNR button and a CR02, and it says Symphony Sound, I might consider. I know that the FSM has a drawing of the 3 models which came with the '84, but unfortunately I don't have it with me at the moment. The radio in the Third link does have an equalizer, and displays green as opposed to amber.what is the significance of this? Is it a different year model? Just curious to learn as much as possible about what each distinction means. So, (at least for me), that wouldn't work. One other note is that the faceplate reads "DELCO" and not "Symphony Sound". The radio in the second link looks about right, except of course the knobs are simulated wood and not the usual silver. I do not plan on re-wiring the car (just not my thing), and am merely looking for a working OEM model which keeps the car as original as possible. I do not know if that radio would work in a car without the requisite wiring, so, unless someone is 100% certain, I personally would probably avoid it. The radio in your first link (which is 1/3 black and 2/3 silver) is the high end Bose model. Thanks for the response! There is a lot to digest here.and in some ways it opens up some very interesting questions.Īccording to what I have read on other posts, you are absolutely correct. I guess you'd have to contact him through eBay. If you get the right model, others on the forum said he can add the input as a custom job. This is the guy, you can see the custom input. I don't remember who the guy/company is, but it's somewhere on the forum. Which is cool, and would circumvent the tape deck altogether. There's a guy somewhere in the US who will add a plug input for a phone/iPod etc. This one looks right, but I believe the original knobs are silver plastic ones: Would, say, a 1986 stereo work fine in a 1983-1985 Eldo? I'd guess it would work, but the digital readout might be green. Others, with the top of the line stereo with separate amps and door speakers of that era… will that head unit/stereo work with a regular speaker set up? In other words, does the head unit put out pre-amp outputs, or regular power? I'm wondering if you can just throw that model in and it will work. Your aftermarket stereo should, hopefully, have a wiring harness adapter… in which case you'll just unplug the old stereo and plug in the factory original with no trouble. On the one with the bracket, on the back side you can see the female opening for the stereo wiring harness. The other stereo (with an EQ and orange PWR button) is a later model the previous owner bought but never installed (as I recall). That is the one I believe is the factory original stereo. You can see the white plastic mounting bracket. I believe the cassette players fail often, and need to be repaired. I think I needed it when I installed my after market stereo, so you likely already have that in the car now. You want an orange/dark yellow digital read out to match the AC read out.Īs I recall, there is a white plastic mounting bracket that fits in the dash and supports the stereo. One thing you want to make sure of is the color of the digital read out. The stereo with a black plastic face (cheaper, not gold) matches the dash better. Personally, I think the gold face on the stereo doesn't look great. So I don't think the stereos those years had actual equalizers, just bass and treble control sliders. For what it's worth, according to the 1985 brochure this is the top of the line "Delco-GM/Bose Symphony Sound System" stereo:
